Level
This is the archival term for where the record can be found in the catalogue structure. The levels currently used in the catalogue are:

Collection level
An introduction to each archive collection, such as Dennis Brothers Ltd of Guildford, vehicle manufacturers, including overall reference number, provenance information, and details of the history of the organisation or individual who created the records.

Series level
Each series of records within the collection. For example minute books, photographs or technical drawings.

Sub series level
Each sub series of records within the collection. For example photographs of fire engines.

Sub sub series level
Each sub sub series of records within the collection. For example photographs of fire engines made on glass plate negatives.

Item level
One item within the series, for example a single photograph, with its reference number, description and date, of a fire engine made for London Fire Brigade.

SHC Reference
The reference number you will need when requesting further information or to view the material.

System ID
This number provides a link to the full catalogue of a particular collection. Take care not to confuse this number with the SHC Reference when requesting a particular document.
