Brief guide to searching
There are two main ways to search the database, simple and advanced searching.

Simple search
The simple search is accessed via the “Google-style” search box in the top right hand corner of the CalmView page.

By default, the simple search will search across the Title and Description fields. Where more than one term is entered, the default is an AND search.

Use (double) quotes around a search term to return exact matching phrases.

For example: "Railway Station"

See the “What are acceptable searches?” page for samples of simple searches.

Advanced search
The advanced search enables you to perform “Any text field” searches, and also to search specifically on certain fields, including Document Type (Archives, Illustrations or Printed Maps), Date, SHC reference, and Image Available (Yes/No)

Refine advanced search criteria
By default, a search will look for the word or phrase you have entered. However you can choose to change the default search criteria by clicking the “Refine Search Criteria” option. There are three ways to refine the search option:

Find all words entered [AND search]
Find any words entered [OR search]
Don’t find these words [NOT search]

See the “What are acceptable searches?” page for samples of advanced searches

Wildcard search
At both simple and advanced search level you can also do a wildcard search with *. So, for example, Phill* will find the surnames Phillips and Phillpott; church* will find church and churches

SHC reference number search
To display a whole catalogue in reference number order put the overall collection SHC reference number in the SHC reference search box. The catalogue should display on the initial search results page in reference number order (however, there are a few collections where the catalogue is very large and this will not happen).

Search results
Initial search results are displayed in a table. Click on a table heading to sort your search results (for example in reference order or date order). Click on a row in the search results to access the full catalogue description for the item. From the full catalogue description, click on the SHC reference number to browse the catalogue in its hierarchy. Be aware that the numbers displayed in the hierarchy are the system reference numbers, which are often not the same as the SHC reference number. To order the item you will need to use the SHC reference number as it appears in the hit list.
